Tome of the Lost Review
Tome of the Lost is an upcoming online slot with crisp graphics, sinister audio effects, and amazing features. It will come from the workshop of the leading iGaming supplier Play’N GO and is expected to be easy to find across the partner casino network. A Treasure Cave is about to be explored, so let's begin!
Play'N GO has a sense of creating dynamic slot games inspired by monsters and creatures from other worlds. Tome of the Lost is a similar adventure, by all means, with plenty to offer. The board stands in the middle with elegant decorations of a sea monster with massive tentacles, known as the Kraken.
The grid is divided into 5 reels and 5 rows, and it's powered by a Cluster Pays engine and a Cascading mechanic. Four symbols of any kind touching horizontally, vertically, or both form winning clusters. Once they are evaluated, symbols explode and are removed from the active zone, with new ones coming from above to take their places.
Seasoned slot enthusiasts are familiar with these mechanics, as they have been used by Play'N GO and other top providers plenty of times. Beneath the reels, players will find slidable Bet tabs, while Spin and Autoplay buttons are on the right. The game is also packed with Fast Play and several other settings, mostly related to sound effects.

Tome of the Lost features a Pirate theme, so the high-valued symbol designs make sense. A skull with a captain's hat stays on top and pays from 2x to 100x the bet, followed by Sword (1.50x - 60x), Gem Ring (1x - 40x), and Pendant with Jolly Roger (0.70x - 30x). The low-valued symbols land in the form of multicolored gemstones.
Purples pay from 0.40x to 6x, Reds - 0.30x to 5x, Blues - 0.20x to 4x, and Greens award between 0.10x to 2x the bet. Tome of the Lost is packed with several different wild symbols, and each one substitutes for all regulars, helping you form more frequent and impressive winning clusters. The game has no other special or bonus symbols.
The Tome of the Lost RTP is 96%, and for the time being, we have no information about versions with alternative payout rates. The game is characterized by high levels of volatility, and the max win is in the low tiers - 2,000x the bet. Stakes vary from €0.10 to €100 per spin, and the provider has added a total of 15 bet levels.
Tome of the Lost Features
Tome of the Lost is packed with plenty of amazing features, most of which are based on the concept of wild symbols. The Symbols Collection mechanic is at the heart of the bonus minigame and is represented by a Compass in the upper left corner of your screen. You can find more information about the available extras in the following paragraphs.
Kraken Marks & Cave Effects
Kraken Marks appear randomly on the grid at the beginning of each spin, and forming a win above one will activate it. Once all cascades are over, the activated Kraken Mark will wake the Kraken and will add 2 Special Wilds on random positions. Thus, new clusters may form, and the payout sequence may continue.
Special Wild lands in the form of a Tome, while the Pirate Captain is Multiplier Wild. If you score a winning combination with the help of a wild with multiplier, the respective payout will be doubled (x2). All symbols removed from the grid during a cascading sequence within the same round are collected by the Cave Compass.
In order to charge it, you will need to remove at least 42 symbols with wilds included. The Cave Compass has 3 other stages that you will reach before that, and they will add Cave Effect modifiers to power up your performance. Here is what you can expect:
- 7 collected symbols - adds 2 Special Wilds.
- 14 collected symbols - adds 2 Special Wild. A win with one or two of them triggers Darkness. Darkness removes a row or column.
- 27 collected symbols - adds 2 Special Wild. A win with one or two of them triggers Emptiness. Emptiness removes all installments of one random symbol.
- 42 collected symbols - activates the bonus.
Treasure Cave Free Round
Once you collect 42 symbols or more, the Compass will be fully charged, and you can enter the Cave. Treasure Cave Free Round is a Free Spins bonus with Cave Effects being counted and not the rounds. You can get a minimum of 3 Cave Effects for collecting 42 symbols.
Another feature will be added for every 3 collected symbols on top, up to a maximum of 7 Cave Effects. During the Free Round, whenever all wins are evaluated, and there are no other clusters on the grid, a Cave Effect - Darkness or Emptiness will be activated. This will continue until no more Cave Effects are at hand, and the bonus will be over.
Mega Wild Symbol
Treasure Cave Free Round starts with 11 or 12 Kraken Marks, and if you manage to activate them all, the mighty monster will appear. Kraken is a Mega Symbol of a 2x2 size and acts as a Walking Wild. It will appear on top of the grid and will move a position down while awarding payouts on the row. That will guarantee an impressive bonus prize at the end!
Theme & Graphics
If anything of Tome of the Lost sounds familiar to you, the reason is that the game is actually a complete reskin of another Play'N GO slot. Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness was released in 2019, and it brings players into a fantasy world of madness where the ruler is a monster named Cthulhu.
In fact, Cthulhu is quite similar to Kraken as both have tentacles and inspire fear in the hearts and minds of men. Visually, Tome of the Lost is superior, of course, as there is a gap of about 6 years between the two releases. The animation effects are better, and Rich Wilde is replaced by a black-bearded pirate captain.
Play'N GO has included a similar voiceover, which is even more sinister than the one in Tome of Madness. That is one of my favorite parts in both slots, and I believe that it is fundamental to the overall vibe. Tome of the Lost is a mobile-friendly slot that, thanks to HTML5, will flawlessly run on any smartphone or tablet.

Our Verdict
Tome of the Lost steps in an exciting but also well-exploited category by Play'N GO and brings the excitement of Tome of Madness to another level. But the 2019 game is not the only one in the provider's game stack that has these mechanics. Tome of Insanity, for example, is a more recently released game - 2024.
It is part of the Rich Wilde series, too, and has the potential to pay up to 20,000x the bet via Cluster Pays. The Portal collects all symbols from cascades and will activate Book Wilds and features. The game is also packed with multiplier wilds, an All-Seeing Eyes feature, and Free Spins. The 2x2 mega monster here is a 2x2 Yog-Sothoth.
Moving a few months ahead, we see Medusa's Madness in Play'N GO's repertoire. It features medium volatility, Cluster Pays, and Stone Gateway collection mechanics. The Eye Marks, Special Wilds, and modifiers - Petrify and Gaze, describe Tome of the Lost to the greatest extent. Kraken is replaced by Medusa here!
Before concluding this review, I wish to highlight another upcoming slot with such mechanics - Tome of Dead. We get back to the Rich Wilde adventures with that title and to ancient Egypt. However, the slot comes with some awesome advancements, like 4 modifiers, more and bigger wilds, and a more sophisticated Free Spins bonus with a bloodthirsty Ammit the Devourer.
All that clearly displays that the provider's concept still has solid potential. On its own, Tome of the Lost is a magnificent online slot, but Play'N GO fans may be disappointed by the lack of upgrades. Still, it has a charm, and hopefully, the RTP rate is higher and the information we currently possess is not accurate!
