Gates of Camelot

Gates of Camelot Review

It's been a while since Playtech released its last slot based on the legends of King Arthur and British medieval history. Gates of Camelot was officially released in the middle of August as a beacon of the company's attempts to reclaim positions in the Retail Slots segment not just in the United Kingdom, but globally.

Therefore, it felt natural for Playtech to use its UK studio, Psiclone Games. The brand was acquired in 2014 to take charge of the company's endeavors in that iGaming niche. It's a small studio based in Lichfield, which was founded by Mike Fox in 2007 and is mostly known for games like Fairground Fortunes Clowny's and Fairground Fortunes Ghost Train.

But let's not be too wordy because Playtech actually puts its name next to the Gates of Camelot slot, adding only a small Psiclone logo in the upper left corner. This has been the first RNG spinner exploiting the Medieval theme since 2019 when Glory and Britannia was released - a slot featuring iconic characters, like Guinivier, Arthur, Merlin, and even Robin Hood.

The quality of visual and audio representation of Gates of Camelot is much higher! Graphis are crystal-clear despite the rather basic background of stone slopes surrounding King Arthur's fortress during the night. The view is from the castle walls, and mysterious illuminations light up the air when the bonus is activated.

The nice tunes and a creatively designed playing grid complete the picture and remind us that the game is built by a company with affinity to the attention to detail. The board comes in the form of a fortress wall and a gate beneath consisting of 5 reels and 3 rows. There are 20 fixed paylines, too, orientated from the leftmost reel to the right.

Gates of Camelot is a mobile-friendly slot based on HTML5 and compatible with Android, Windows, and iOS. There are several technical tools part of the interface, including Turbo for faster gameplay and Autoplay to free your hands. Playtech has also added expanding wilds and Mystery symbols for greater wins!

Gates of Camelot Slot - Reels Screen

Symbols in Gates of Camelot look brilliantly and stay as little pieces of treasure on the relatively small grid. King's Crown pays 4x, 10x, and 20x the bet, while Sovereign's Orb and Silver Goblet award up to 10x and 6x, respectively. The other High Pays are Pendant with Cross and Emerald Ring, paying from 0.50x to 5x.

The low-valued symbols in the game appear as poker card royalties, A, K, Q, and J, paying various rewards between 0.10x and 2.50x the bet. The gameplay also includes wilds, scatters, and Mystery symbols, but I'll introduce them in the next part of this review article.

The Gates of Camelot RTP is 95.50%, while the Hit Frequency rate is 15.94%, which sounds natural given the game’s medium volatility. The betting range is wide - €0.10 up to €300 per spin, so various strategies might be successful. The max win is set at a decent 7,050x the bet, which can result in a win of more than €2 million.

Gates of Camelot Features

Gates of Camelot is packed with awesome features but is not too lavish in bonuses. Indeed, the full-reel wilds and common Mystery symbols change the vibe and significantly increase the slot's dynamics. Still, everyone is waiting for the bonus minigame, as it's the actual game changer here!

Expanding Wilds

Knight Wilds can land on reels 2, 3, and 4, and from my experience with the game, they appear quite frequently. They also serve as Expanding Wilds and cover fully the respective columns. Knight Wilds pay no direct cash but substitutes for all symbols except Scatters and Mystery Symbols.

Mystery Symbols

Another modifier during the base game is Mystery symbols, which may land anywhere and often in stacks. Then, all instances will reveal the same regular symbol, and potential payouts will be evaluated. The combination of stacked Mystery symbols and expanding wilds can easily deliver multiple 5-of-a-kind combinations.

Free Spins

Gates of Camelot is packed with an engaging Free Spins bonus as well, and 3, 4, or 5 Shield scatters award 10, 12, or 15 free spins, respectively. The minigame is played with a special Symbol Upgrade Track that will appear on top of the reels. It will initially display all regular symbols from J to King's Crown.

Every Knight Expanding Wild in view awards 1 extra free spin and removes the lowest-paying symbol from the track. Mystery symbols act as usual and reveal the same symbol, but only from those that remain active. Thus, several wilds can really increase the payout potential of the bonus!

Pros And Cons Of Gates of Camelot Slot

Our Verdict

Gates of Camelot is another nice representation of the Medieval theme, featuring popular characters such as the Knights of the Round Table. However, no names have been spoken, and no exact legends have been told! And perhaps that is the biggest drawback of the game!

Somehow, I expected a more detailed plot by such a skilled and devoted provider and a few jackpots to sweeten the deal. If I may refer to The Sword and the Grail Excalibur, the gameplay is smoother due to the lack of too many complex features. However, Play’N GO has strengthened the plot by mentioning key artifacts, like the Grail and the Excalibur.

On the other hand, Gates of Camelot is definitely a simpler slot with amazing visuals and attractive features. In terms of the artwork, I can compare it with the Tales of Camelot - Moonlit Quest by Spinomenal, where we can witness true mastery. And Playtech has done even better if you switch to playing on mobile.

In any case, the positives here heavily outweigh the negatives, which I can say are of a more personal character. Overall, the slot comes with all the necessary elements to rank well in pretty much every slot ranking except for the RTP. I believe that even with medium volatility, this machine could have been squeezed a little more!
